La vida real del Príncipe Carlos

There’s no denying that Prince Charles’ life has been a rollercoaster. For as long as he can remember, the Prince of Wales has always known that one day his time would come to don the crown and become King of England. However, Queen Elizabeth II’s son has taken many twists and turns in his life. Here are some of the most unforgettable ones…

Was he really born to be King?

From day one, Prince Charles was a man of firsts and often broke the royal mould. In November 1948, a young Princess Elizabeth gave birth to Charles, and newspapers reported at the time that he was a “lovely boy, a really splendid baby.”

Surprisingly, the newborn prince was the first royal baby to be born at Buckingham Palace in the 20th century. Although he did not have to grow up during the first or second world war, Charles would have his own battles to deal with over the years…

Crown Pass

February 6, 1952 marked a bittersweet moment in the history of the British monarchy. King George VI, Charles’ grandfather, was diagnosed with a coronary thrombosis and eventually passed away. This meant two important things. First, George’s daughter Elizabeth immediately became the Queen of England.

Subsequently, at just three years and three months old, Charles was now first in line to the throne. This would begin one of the longest periods any royal has had as heir…

The Little Prince

As the years went by, Charles was given more and more titles. However, one of his most important titles came in July 1958, when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, created him Prince of Wales. It made sense, since the nine-year-old was a male heir to the throne.

More than a decade later, Charles was officially crowned Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle. Even as his royal duties piled up, Prince Charles remained determined to have some sort of normality in his life…

Like any other student

As he entered his teens, Prince Charles continued to break royal norms, determined to have some sort of “normal” life, whatever that meant. In October 1967, he became the first royal heir to attend university.

He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge until he finally graduated in 1970 with a 2:2 in anthropology, archaeology and history. Many casual fans wondered why a member of the British royal family failed to graduate with an A. Some speculate that it was for the following reason…

“Ladies’ Man”

Although Prince Charles’ personal life later spiraled out of control, it seems the royal family did not forgive him for long before he married anyone. Some family members told the press that he was a “lady juan.”

However, Charles was quick to deny such claims and was deeply hurt by such accusations. Although future relationships did not help his case, Charles has since spoken out…

The saga begins…

1971 was the year that Prince Charles’ personal life began to take some major turns. It was the year that he met Camilla Shand and they soon began dating. By all accounts, it seemed like a match made in heaven.

However, the couple eventually broke up when Camilla began dating Andrew Parker Bowles. They married in 1973 and Charles was back to square one. He turned his attention elsewhere…

In the Navy

Around the same time that Prince Charles was tangled up with Camilla, he began a six-month training program as a jet pilot in the Royal Air Force. The young prince eventually moved on to the Royal Navy, where he would serve on several ships and even train as a helicopter pilot.

For the last ten months of his naval service, Charles took command of HMS Bronington. Many years later, his flying days would come to an end when he crashed a BAe 146 in the Hebrides.

The first of many charitable works

In 1976, Charles left his days in the navy behind him and began planning what he was going to do next with his life. Shortly after leaving his service, the Prince of Wales used the $8,000 he had accumulated from his military pension to establish The Prince’s Trust.

This charity aims to help young people in need. The Prince’s Trust was the first of more than 25 charities that Prince Charles has created or been involved with over the years.
